Welcome to Cancer Council Australia’s Annual Review, which reports on our progress and performance for the 2016-17 financial year.

Cancer Council Australia is Australia’s leading independent cancer organisation, working with our members, the eight state and territory Cancer Councils, to reduce the impact of cancer across the country.

As well as highlighting the work of Cancer Council Australia as a peak national body, this year’s report brings together highlights from across our members to demonstrate Cancer Council’s national impact.

As the leading non-government funder of cancer research in Australia, this year we continued our vital work across all cancers, at all stages, for all Australians. In conjunction with our research partners, we provided more than $60 million in research funding, helping us better understand cancer and its causes, and improving care and treatment options for those with cancer.

Our prevention programs touched many lives around Australia as we encouraged the public to reduce their cancer risk factors by making healthy lifestyle choices, quitting smoking, reducing UV exposure, taking part in early detection programs, and avoiding cancer risks in the workplace. We have also continued our tireless advocacy work, calling on the federal government to improve the early detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer through new and renewed public health programs.

Our support services remain a pivotal part of what we do as we continued to provide information, counselling, practical and emotional support for every step of the cancer journey. This year the Cancer Council information and support line, 13 11 20, answered more than 46,000 calls, while we facilitated more than 580 community support groups around the nation. We also produced a range of publications for health practitioners, ensuring they have the most up-to-date evidence-based resources.

The generosity of every day Australians continues to help us achieve our goals, and this year we were grateful to receive more than $10.9 million through donations, bequests and corporate partnerships, as well as royalties from sales of our sun protection products.

You can find a summary of our financial performance in the financial report section, along with a more detailed financial report that can be downloaded in PDF format.

We thank all our supporters for what they helped us achieve in 2016-17, and look forward to creating a cancer-free future with them in the years to come.
