In my second year as Chair of Cancer Council Australia I am pleased to bring you this year’s annual review and financial report.

The last financial year has been a period of change for Cancer Council Australia. This is reflected in our updated constitution, new financial management and audit systems, and a new national charter and values statement, as well as a refreshed approach to the organisation’s core functions. 

Cancer Council Australia is a national body representing the interests of our members – the eight state and territory Cancer Council organisations. Our work over the last year has included enhancing our relationship with our state and territory colleagues to maximise our collective impact across cancer research, support, information and advocacy. 

In November 2016 we convened a Cancer Council Federation-wide strategy day. This meeting brought together Board Chairs from state and territory Cancer Councils across the country, alongside Cancer Council CEOs and staff from Cancer Council Australia. The purpose of the day was to discuss Cancer Council’s future vision, purpose and value statement, and to agree on a national charter for how Cancer Councils across the country will work together. Collaboratively we agreed on our vision of a cancer-free future and our new charter is complete and already enhancing how we work together towards this aspiration. 

Over the last year the Cancer Council Australia board also supported CEO Prof Sanchia Aranda in a revision of the core functions undertaken by the organisation. This included a decision to refocus on cancer control and a move away from managing national fundraising campaigns, which will now be handled directly by our state and territory members. This decision was made in recognition of the further impact Cancer Council Australia can make in cancer control leadership by focusing on evidence-based policy and advocacy across the cancer control spectrum, from prevention and early detection to treatment, support and health service delivery. 

Good financial management and audit systems are essential to the effective governance of any charity, and over this year the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee has overseen the development of new financial policies, introduced an improved financial reporting system, and revised all our financial arrangements. This year’s financial report and clean audit demonstrates strong financial management and I am indebted to our Finance, Risk and Audit Committee Chair, Hugh Harley, for his leadership. 

The Board Governance Committee, ably lead by Judith Dwyer, has also overseen the successful adoption of a new constitution, bringing Cancer Council Australia’s governance up to date with best practice.  

Finally, over the last year we have farewelled several long-standing board members: Stephen Foster, Graham Gibson, Meinir Krishnasamy and Rosanna Martinello. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Stephen, Graham, Meinir and Rosanna for their long-term contributions while welcoming our new board members, Prof Phyllis Butow, Trisha Cashmere, Sue Hart and Roger Traves. 

2018 promises to be a time of further evolution as we move towards a new Cancer Council Australia strategy. I look forward to working with our new board and the Cancer Council Australia team to further enhance our organisation’s governance and impact.
